By Mac and O...

By "Mac" and "O" you'll always know
true Irishmen, they say.
But, if they lack both "O" or "Mac",
no Irishmen are they.


The Scottish prefix "Mc" translates into English as "son of...", which is then followed by the surname.
Therefore, "McCain" literally means "son of Cain".

The Irish prefix "O" translates into English as "grandson of...", which is then followed by the surname.
Therefore, "O'Bama" literally means "grandson of Bama".
